US report wants talks with Libya
Libya-USA, Politics, 5/24/2003

A report issued by a commission of American experts said that Libya has changed its position concerning terrorism. The report urged the US to think of resuming talks with this country.

The report added under the title " towards a cautious re-linking," that the US policy towards Libya concentrated in the past on the cold war conditions which have changed today, and that all indicators show a change in the Libyan policy towards terrorism." The US has severed its talks with Libya only with matters relating to the bombing of flight number 103 of the American airline in 1988.

The Atlantic council which is concerned with giving recommendations in international affairs adopted what was stated in the report which called for removing Libya's name from the US Department Of State list of countries involved in terrorism, and urged Washington to test Tripoli's desire in giving up terrorism.

The report added that the US has to convince the Libyan leader of the benefits of good relations with it and other countries.

The report also considered that this matter will be useful for the American economy as the American energy companies, which were prevented from developing the Libyan reserves of oil and gas, to make use of the absence of other companies from the Libyan arena.

The report agrees to the American conditions imposed by the UN on Libya in demanding strict conditions and requirements imposed by the UN Security Council which state that Libya has to pay compensations for the families of the victims of flight no. 103 and admit responsibility for the attack.
