Bremer desolves the Iraqi army
Iraq-USA, Politics, 5/24/2003

The US administrator for Iraq Paul Bremer has announced the desolution of the armed Iraqi forces, the ministry of information, and other security structures, used to belong to Saddam Hussein regime, according to one of Bremer's main aides.

The official said that the decision includes desolving the ministry of defense, the national guards forces which is considered the elite of the armed forces during the rule of Saddam Hussein. He added that the coalition is preparing plans to form a new Iraqi army.

The official explained that "the provisional coalition authorities plan to form new Iraqi forces in the near future. This is the first step on the way to form national potentials for self defense of a free Iraq."

On the other hand, the US on Thursday placed six countries which are Libya, Iran, Syria, Sudan, Cuba and North Korea on this list of countries which do not cooperate wholly with Washington in fighting terrorism. Iraq was not listed. The list was in an official memorandum naming countries that Washington can not export weapons to because of their involvement in international terrorism, according to the American arms Control Export Act.
