Voting for lifting UN sanctions off Iraq tomorrow
Iraq-USA, Politics, 5/20/2003

The US has stressed yesterday its rejection of an Iraqi government in Baghdad, rather to be confined to an interim authority that stems from a national conference expected to be held in June, under the pretext that the Iraqi groups which were formed under its auspices in what is known as "the council of 7" lacks people's representation because it was "not elected" by the people.

Meantime, thousands of Shiites took the streets in Baghdad in a large demonstration in which the Iraqi Sunnis took part. The demonstrators stressed national unity between the two major Iraqi sects and the rejection to any government that is a dummy in the hands of foreign occupation which asked for the evacuation of occupation from Iraq.

Meantime, the US submitted an amended copy of its project on lifting the sanctions from Iraq "taking into account the concerns" expressed by other members at the UN Security Council since it had proposed to them the text for the first time on May 9th and hopes to vote for it by tomorrow.

The US ambassador to the UN said that his country proposed the amended copy on the "hope to get a voteg on the draft resolution some time this week."
