Vesavismaya Ghazetta: Israel and the war for water
Regional-Israel, Politics, 5/20/2003
Min. Without Portfolio responsible for Diaspora and Jerusalem affairs, Natan Sharanski, said that Israel is ready for war and that water for it is a matter which is of no less importance than oil.
In a statement to the Russian Vesavismaya Ghazetta yesterday, Sharanski said that Syria and Lebanon should decide if they want to be Israel's partners or will try to use water against Israel, and in the latter situation Israel has to fight once again.
He added that it is possible that Israel is the only country in the world which uses its water resources 100% "even every drop of its rainfall is collected and then used and this is understood very well by every one who wants to eliminate us."
He indicated that the war of 1967 took place because of water when the Arab states prevented water access to north Israel. "Should we have had permitted that, slow death would have started to Israel because of thirst."
He said that the Lebanese Hizbullah party wants to redistribute the waters and "we will not permit that once again. This for us equals to the use of the mass destruction weapons against us and this is a matter of life or death for us."
As for the Iraqi Jews who live in Israel, Sharanski said, it is possible that they constitute a bridge to establish relations with Iraq especially in the economic field.
