Government spokesman: enemies of democracy and modernity behind casablanca attacks
Morocco, Local, 5/19/2003

There will no state of emergency nor any land or sea borders closure in connection with the Casablanca terrorist attacks that claimed 41 fatalities and a hundred of casualties, said Morocco's Interior Minister in an interview published on Sunday by daily "Assahra al Maghribya."

"These terrorist attacks will have no consequences on the Kingdom's economy," said Sahel, noting that "no country in the world is secured against terrorism, considered the curse of the century."

The Moroccan official stressed that the Kingdom "will know how to face the situation," adding that the "Moroccans are mobilized behind H.M King Mohammed VI and determined to carry on the development process."

Morocco's communication minister and spokesman of the government, Nabil Benabdellah, said Friday attacks in Casablanca were perpetrated by "enemies of Morocco and of democracy and modernity."

The minister told Qatar-based Arab news channel "Al Jazeera" authors of the attacks are also those who oppose any process to build an open and tolerant democratic society.

Morocco, he went on, has produced evidence that it is respecting diversity, democracy and freedom and that it is adhering to the values of modernity. These criminal acts will not shake Morocco in its principles, he stressed.
