Police identifies eight of 14 bombers, no UAE national arrested
Morocco-United Arab Emirates, Local, 5/19/2003
Morocco justice minister said eight out of the 14 authors of Friday's terrorist attacks in Casablanca were identified, while an authorized source denied the arrest of a national from the United Arab Emirates.
The authorized source brought a flat denial to news reported by an Arab news TV channel that a national from the United Arab Emirates (a former officer) was among the persons arrested or currently having their identity checked.
The Moroccan justice minister told the Moroccan TV on Saturday all the bombers were killed in the attacks, safe for one who was arrested. "He was the one who provided information on these criminals and who helped in identifying persons connected to the attempts."
He also stressed that the findings of investigation will be announced "shortly." First findings revealed that some terrorists are Moroccans who came back recently from abroad and who were connected to some individuals currently standing trial at the appeal court of Casablanca. Other clues indicate that they are connected to an underground group called "Assirat al-Mustaquim" (the right path).
The minister stressed that fighting terrorism is not an exclusively security matter but should associate all citizens. "Several events, he explained, showed that citizens were the first to inform security forces and contributed, in some cases, to the arrest of criminals." (MAP)SH
