Palestine-Israel, Military, 5/19/2003

The Palestinian resistance retaliated to the daily massacres carried out by the Israeli occupation forces in the occupied territories by carrying out three operations in East Jerusalem and Hebron that resulted in killing 9 Israelis, wounding 22, while two Palestinians were killed after they had broken into a settlement in the West Bank near the Green light and other three in incursions operations by the Israeli forces in Gaza.

These attacks took place hours before and after a meeting between the Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon and his Palestinian peer Mahmoud Abbas in Jerusalem. The first of its kind at this level between the two sides since the beginning of the Palestinian Intifada by the end of September 2000.

Sharon decided to postpone his visit to Washington where he was presumed to meet on Tuesday with the US President George Bush.

The director of the Israeli police told the press that the Palestinian who detonated himself in the bus was "disguising in an Israeli clergy uniform."

Palestinian sources said that a 19 year old Palestinian considered a supporter for the Hamas movement executed the operation in the Jerusalem bus. Family members said that Basem al-Takrouri, the student at the Politechnique Institute in Hebron ( which was closed by the Israeli army) disappeared on Saturday evening and the family dressed in black in mourning since Sunday morning after announcing the operation.

The Palestinian government denounced the two operations which took place in East Jerusalem, stressing rejection to target the civilians. the Palestinian minister of information said in a press statement "we condemn the operation which took place in Jerusalem and this is in the context of the Palestinian firm stand in rejecting such kind of operations which are damaging to civilians. He called on the Israeli government for "self control"
