Washington stresses support for Sudanese peace negotiations; Khartoum ratifies terrorism- fighting agreements
Sudan-USA, Politics, 5/17/2003
The Sudanese foreign ministry announced that the government ratified the International agreement on fighting terrorism funding approved in 1999 as well as the Treaty of the Organization of the Islamic Conference OIC on fighting terrorism for 1999 and the agreement of the African Unity Organization- the current African federation -- to prevent terrorism and fighting it for 1999 also.
In a statement, the Sudanese foreign ministry said that Sudan, by ratifying these treaties, will be in the first place a side to all multilateral international agreements in the area of fighting international terrorism.
The Ministry said that by its ratification of the OIC treaty and the African unity Organization Treaty, Khartoum will have asserted principles on the ground of which the two organizations were built to formulating world peace and security, supporting regional cooperation on fighting terrorism and violations of world peace and security.
The ministry indicated that the Sudanese government by ratifying these agreements has fulfilled its due obligations necessitated by the UN Security Council, the UN General Assembly, the OIC and the African federation concerned with fighting terrorism.
The ratified documents which were signed by the Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir were sent to be documented at the OIC secretary general and the secretaries of the African Federation and the UN.
On the other hand, the chairman of for African affairs committee at the US Senate said that the President Bush's administration submitted a report saying that progress was achieved in the peace talks in Sudan during the past six months, noting that he agrees with that and considers it necessary to continue supporting the current negotiations.
In statement quoted by the American Arabic language radio "Sawa" (altogether), the American official expressed his fear that talks will be long between the Sudanese government and the opposition.
Worthy mentioning that some 2 million Sudanese were killed since the beginning of the war in Sudan in 1983. The conflict of ideologies, the emergence of oil and the participation of several sects resulted in the deterioration of the war. Since July 2002 the inter- Sudanese peace talks are striving to achieve a progress.
