Official statistics: Islam is fastest growing religion in Canada

Results on the Canadian population statistics for 2001 showed the notable increase in the number of Muslims in Canada during the last decades of the 20th century because of the flow of Muslim emigrants from southern Asia, North Africa and the Middle East.

The number of Muslims increased in Canada at a rate of 128.9% during the last decade of the 20th century to reach 579,000 inhabitants. A matter which makes Islam the fastest growing religion in Canada while the number of Muslims constitutes 2% of the total Canadian population.

Certain Canadian dailies like "Toronto Globe and Mail" said in an article issues of May 14 that the increase in the number of Canadian Muslims might be conducive to the increase desire within the Canadian government to take more neutral position concerning the Middle East.

Meantime, another Canadian daily "Montreal Gazette" said in an article published on May 14 that Muslims have become the largest minority in Quebec province which is considered one of the largest Canadian provinces.

The paper indicated that results of the Canadian population statistics for 2001 revealed the increase in the number of Muslims in Quebec from 108,000 citizens by the beginning of the last decade to 141,000 by the end of the 20th century.
