Solana has officially handed Syria over the roadmap
Syria-European Union, Politics, 5/16/2003

The higher representative of the European Union foreign policy Javier Solana said yesterday in Damascus that he had delivered Syria "officially the Road Map prepared by the Quartet in order to settle the Israeli- Palestinian conflict."

Solana told journalists after his meeting with the Syrian foreign minister Farouk al-Shara "we have discussed the Road Map and handed over the minister officially this document." He explained that the talks were frank and that the Road Map was for the sake of peace and this means a peace that actually covers Syria and Lebanon.

On April 29, al-Shara said that "Syria has not received the Road Map," stressing that Damascus desires the Road Map to include Syria and Lebanon.

However, the Road Map which was drawn by the quartet committee on the Middle East which includes the UN, the EU, the US and Russia, in particular states the foundation of a Palestinian state of stages by the fall of 2005.

Al-Shara stressed to the press his country's desire that the "Quartet will play a role in the ME peace process."

Replying to a question on what the resumption of peace talks between Israel and Syria needs, al-Shara explained that this will be according to UN Security Council resolutions concerned and on the ground of the "land for peace" formula and Madrid conference terms of reference of 1991.

However, Solana arrived in Syria on Wednesday evening in the course of a tour in the Middle East that covered Saudi Arabia. After Syria, Solana will head for Lebanon.
