One prisoner was tortured to death, 6 Egyptian policemen jailed
Egypt, Judicial, 5/15/2003

Judicial sources said that Almenya criminal court ( 250 km to the south of Cairo) issued prison sentences of periods between one to 10 years on 6 Egyptian policemen "for torturing one citizen while he was in custody, until his death."

The court stated to punish three policemen for 10 year imprisonment over "torturing one citizen while he was in reserve custody to force him to admit stealing cattle and trading with drugs." The man died because of wounds he had.

The court's decision also stated to jail "a police officer" for one year because "the investigation report he made ignored the torture incident against the prisoner" and a police doctor for the same period for "falsifying the medical report to that effect."

The Egyptian organization for human rights in April denounced embarking on torture methods which resulted in the death of prisoners in the Egyptian police stations, noting that seven deaths were recorded since 1948.
