Powell and Maher hold press conference in Cairo
Egypt-USA, Politics, 5/13/2003

The U.S. Secretary of State, Colin Powell, has asserted his country's commitment to push peace process in the Middle East forward.

In a joint press conference here on Monday with Egyptian Foreign Minister, Ahmad Maher, Powell pointed out to the priority of an immediate implementation of the road map by the Israeli and Palestinian sides in the current stage.

He mentioned that Israelis didn't inform him of their acceptance of the roadmap and that they have some notes and commentaries regarding it.

Powell stressed the necessity of discussing steps which lead to the implementation of the Road Map and not dealing with the difficult causes related to the refugees return and Jerusalem, as he expressed.

For his part, Maher, stressed the necessity of dealing with the Road Map in the framework of peace process based on the Security Council resolutions and land for peace principle.

Meanwhile, Coordinator of the Foreign and Security Affairs in the European Union, Javier Solana, has called on Israel to implement the Road Map for realizing just and comprehensive peace in the Middle East.

In a joint press conference with the Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa, Solana stressed the continuation of the European role for pushing the peace process forward.

He also stressed Europe's commitment to cooperate with the Arab states and Arab League regarding causes and common interests between the Arab states and Europe.

For his part, Moussa warned against the Israeli practices and attempts of delaying implementation of the Road Map.

Moussa called on the United States to shoulder its responsibilities towards realizing just and comprehensive peace on the basis of the international resolutions and "land for peace" principle.

In Tehran, spokesman of Iran's Foreign Ministry, Hamid Reza Asefi, underlined that the Road Map or any other project or initiative can't give fruits as long as Ariel Sharon and the "Israeli Zionist governments are practicing the expansionist policy."
