Differences besieging the Arab League, news on sacrificing Amr Mousa for AL survival
Regional, Politics, 5/12/2003

Inter- Arab differences have increased in secret to the extent that observers predicted the possibility of changing the secretary general of the Arab League AL, Amr Moussa.

This, however, was coincided with the trade partnership initiative proposed by the US President between the USA and certain Arab states.

Meantime, Moussa said that the AL has been exposed to what he called "a greater conspiracy to destroy it in order to establish a Middle East entity replacing it, and that includes in its membership Israel as a basic member, capitalizing on the critical conditions the region is passing, especially under the current incidents in Iraq and the pressures against Syria," according to Mousa.

The AL chief stressed that the AL will remain and the majority of its members are committed for its existence and maintaining its entity. He added that though there are attempts to foil it and establish another substitute entity, however, it is "an old story and is known and aims at attacking any Arab gathering." Moussa added, noting in statements following his return to Cairo coming from Libya that he had discussed during his tour which lasted for five days in several Maghreb states a bunch of issues debated on the regional and international arenas, especially the Iraqi issue and the importance on whether the Arab states will deal with this Iraqi government or not.

He said that such a decision will be decided by the Arab states, rather than the AL chief. Moussa also indicated that this matter will be discussed during the next meetings of the AL and through the AL member states.

On the vague Libyan stand and what was stated on Libya's persistence to pull out from the Arab league, Moussa said that "Libya is still a member at the AL and did not withdraw from it" and this is despite media reports which confirmed that Libya started on Saturday freezing its activities in institutions belonging to the Arab League. Libya had repeatedly announced its determination to withdraw from the AL, accusing it of inability to solve the problems of the Arab nation.

On the other hand, Israeli press sources unveiled the American conditions in the initiative of the US President George Bush which calls for the foundation of a free trade Zone between the USA and ME states.

The Israeli daily Haaretz, to this effect, said that the list of conditions includes ending the Arab boycott of Israel in preparation for complete normalization, and abrogating or reducing trade barriers in the trade and investment operations with American companies, getting membership in the World Trade Organization and condemning terrorism and fighting it.
