Morocco-Tunisia, Economics, 5/8/2003
The possibility to re-establish railway links between Casablanca and Tunis via Algeria was evoked at an international symposium on railway transport held in Tunis, reported a Tunis daily on Wednesday.
According to the director of maintenance of the Tunisian national railway company, Moncef Chaghal, a commission will make a decision on the re-establishment of railway link in the coming days.
The Tunisian official underlined that there is a North African project aiming to link Casablanca to Cairo (Egypt) through a railway network, adding that it has stopped at the Libyan territory borders where the railway network is not established yet.
The symposium will probe the creation of an Arab unified railway network, a project which has currently reached the phase of implementation.
The symposium will also examine the techniques adopted for the fabrication of railway transport equipment and means to guarantee the transfer of these technologies to Arab countries.
Organized at the initiative of the Railways' Arab Union, the five day meeting will gather over a hundred of representatives of railway networks from Arab and African countries.
