Assafir: Nasrullah: American pressures are very serious, but will not push us to give up resistance option
Lebanon-USA, Politics, 5/8/2003
The secretary general of the Hizbullah party Hassan Nasrullah has stressed that the general developments in the region reveal that the American pressures will be escalated against Syria and Lebanon in the coming phase, but he ruled out the occurrence of fundamental changes in the two states position concerning the major issues, considering that Hizbullah will maintain its option, because the reasons that pushed it to resistance are still there.
In statements to the Lebanese daily Assafir issued today, Nasrullah added that the Americans want to achieve a settlement in the region, strongly, and on their own terms. After "desert storm they went to Madrid conference and worked for imposing many issues. They have now achieved what is more than getting Iraq out of Kuwait, they have entered Baghdad itself. They want to impose a settlement on the Palestinians through the Road Map and they want to pressure everyone in order to make this plan succeed, and therefore the pressure they have started will be escalated."
Nasrullah indicated that "what happened in Iraq was not an ordinary matter and that the pressures that are now made by the US are very serious and should not be dealt with unseriously." But he stressed that "this does not mean that the main titles on the ground of which events in our region are running had witnessed a fundamental change, because Israel still occupies the Arab lands." He added that before the occupation of Iraq and after it, the Israeli occupation has been continuous and therefore resisting this occupation is also continuous and there is nothing that necessitates stopping this resistance in Lebanon or in Palestine.
Nasrullah denied any sort of Lebanese official or Syrian pressure on his party for taking steps relating to the American demands. He said that the demand to send the Lebanese army to the south is not realistic because the army is already there.
