Chairman of Kurdistani national federation briefs Damascus on developments in Iraq
Syria-Iraq, Politics, 5/5/2003

The chairman of the "government" of the Kurdistani National Federation party, Barham Saleh, has announced during his visit to Damascus on Sunday that he briefed Syrian officials on "recent developments in Iraq." In a press conference, Saleh said "we have discussed with the Syrian officials the mechanism of forming an independent national government in Iraq."

He added that the people of Iraq intend to form a "provisional national government as soon as possible." A matter which will ensure "security and public services." He added "we want a democratic and federal Iraq that honors the law," noting that this makes it imperative to desolve the militias and set up a national army whose mission is to defend Iraq."

Saleh said that the "Kurds, Turkman, Arabs and Assures" can be recruited in the Iraqi army." Saleh arrived in Damascus coming from Cairo. He met with the Syrian Vice President Abdul Halim Khaddam and the ruling Baath Party assistant secretary general Abdul Halim Khaddam.

Saleh described the government of Kurdistan as the "main base for the forthcoming regime in Iraq" which, as he claimed will be "democratic, federal and built on pluralism principles." The Kurdistani National Federation party led by Jalal al-Talibani, shares with the Kurdistani Democratic Party chaired by Masoud al- Barazbi, influence in Iraq's Kurdistan, northern Iraq, since the end of the Gulf war in 1991. the two parties had rallies with the American forces in the war against Iraq.
