On al-Shara's visit to Lebanon

Lebanese President, Emil Lahoud, received in Beirut on Syria's Thursday Foreign Minister, Farouk al Shara, who conveyed a message from President Bashar al Assad to his counterpart Emil Lahoud concerning the situation in the region and the bilateral relations between the two states.

Talks during the meeting dealt with the latest developments in the Arab and international arena and the current events particularly in Iraq and the occupied Palestinian territories.

Al-Shara also met his Lebanese counterpart, Jan Obied, at the Foreign Ministry and they reviewed the latest developments in the regional and the international arenas.

They also stressed the unified Syrian- Lebanese stance towards the current challenges facing the region.

In a press conference, al-Shara stressed that the calls between Syria and Lebanon come in the frame of consultation and coordination between the two states.

Concerning Syria's stance towards the American diktat, al-Shara said that "we believe in dialogue and we express readiness to welcome any visitor to Syria and to talk to him."

About the Road Map plan, he underlined that "we can't judge until it is delivered to us formally," stressing that Syria is clinging firmly to certain principles according to this issue.

Concerning Hezbullah, al-Shara underlined that it is a political party in Lebanon stressing that focus should be made on occupation and not those who fight it.

Concerning the latest US statements, Obied asserted that the Taef agreement regulated the relations between Syria and Lebanon on the bases of coordination cooperation confirming the legitimacy of the Syrian presence in Lebanon and stressing that it is necessary and temporary as long as Lebanon needs it.
