Morocco calls for stronger non-proliferation treaty
Morocco-Regional, Politics, 5/1/2003

Morocco called Tuesday before the preparatory committee of the 2005 conference on Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) for the reinforcement of the covenant in a bid to ensure world safety and security.

Recent events highlighted the fragility of international security and the urgent need to reinforce both the international non-proliferation system and the multilateral approach to probe international security and disarmament," said Omar Hilale, Morocco's ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva.

"In spite of its flaws, NPT remains the basic international instrument to prevent nuclear proliferation and guarantee to all signatory states a free access to energy and nuclear techniques," he went on.

Underlining that subscription to the NPT principles are now more primordial than ever, the diplomat stressed that the international Atomic energy agency (IAEA) is the only international authority empowered to guarantee the implementation of these principles and denounce breaching states.

The official slammed Israel for its refusal to adhere to the NPT, noting that such an attitude raises concerns for Middle Eastern countries and for the international community. Israel is the only country having a nuclear military program in the region, he said.

Israel's attitude is a major hindrance for the establishment of a climate of trust, as a first step toward the creation of a Middle East free of nuclear and mass destruction weapons, he went on.
