Abourezk underlines importance of Powell's visit to Syria

Former US. Senator James Abourezk has indicated that US. Secretary of State Colin Powell's visit to Syria gains special importance in the current complicated circumstances that have followed the war on Iraq and their dangerous repercussions on the region in general.

In an interview published by Tishrin daily on Monday, he called on the Arabs to "intensify their move to explain their points of view to the American public opinion which is dominated by the Israeli media machine."

Abourezk recalled the good and positive atmosphere that had prevailed his previous meetings with the Syrian officials particularly with late President Hafez al-Assad, and President Bashar al-Assad.

He described President al-Assad as wise and capable of reading the realities and their future prospects, and has managed to present himself strongly through his clear stances and his visit to major countries.

He praised the American-Syrian dialogue climate which was partly conducted by the Foreign Ministry External Information Director Butheina Shaaban.

He indicated that the Syrian-American relations are linked with a host of issues and mutual interests and each side needs the other in many issues particularly stability in the region and in the world.

He stressed the necessity for the continuation of the Syrian diplomatic action on all levels making use of the international support that the world has shown to Syria's position.

He also warned against the big support that Israel enjoys at the US. Congress.
