Sahrawi ngo to sue Polisario torturers at Spanish justice
Morocco-Algeria, Politics, 4/26/2003

The association of the Polisario victims in Spain (ASVIPO) announced Friday it will sue members of the secessionist group "Polisario" for atrocities committed against persons it is sequestering in the Tindouf camps (southwestern Algeria).

The association, which circulated among the Spanish media a leaflet on its actions and objectives, is mainly composed of individuals born in the Sahara under Spanish rule and who suffered the worst forms of repression, torture and persecutions and spent long years in detention in the Polisario cells in Tindouf.

They argue that those who are responsible for these human rights violations should stand trial before Spanish courts because the victims were born under Spanish occupation and because of the presence in Spain of some authors of torture and forced disappearances, including the Polisario representative in Spain who served as defense minister, Brahim Ghali.

The association counts on the support of political parties and humanitarian associations.

The association members say they want to inquire about the fate of other persons who went missing after being kidnapped by the Polisario military security apparatus. A conference is held this Friday in the locality of Looret de Mar, in Catalunia, to unveil the human rights violations in the Tindouf camps, the embezzlement of humanitarian aid and the plight of the persons sequestered in the camps.
