Morocco, Politics, 4/25/2003
The date for local elections will be announced next Thursday following the government council meeting, communication minister and spokesman for the government, Nabil Benabdellah, said this Thursday at a press briefing after the government's weekly meeting.
During the coming session, the minister of the interior will present a draft decree setting a date for local elections, in addition to other law projects on the exceptional revision of electoral rolls for the professional polling and on the modification of the duration of the communal councils' mandate, said the spokesman.
The minister added that prime minister, Driss Jettou, and political parties represented in the government and in the opposition agreed to adapt the date of these elections to the deadlines stipulated by the constitution, in such a way that the two parliamentary chambers will open on October 10, 2003. The constitution stipulates that the parliament opens its legislature on the second Friday of October.
As to the social dialogue between unions, employers and the government, Nabil Benabdellah said it is conducted in a very positive atmosphere.
The negotiations results and decisions reached on all the debated issues will be announced next week, he said.
The council listened to presentations made by ministers involved in the dialogue with trade unions, namely the ministers of the interior, of social affairs and solidarity, of public sectors modernization and of housing and urbanism.
The ministers briefed the government on the trade unions' grievances, including union freedoms, collective conventions, salaries, housing, health, labor code and the organic law regulating the right to strike," Benabdellah said.
