Sudan: some 44 persons killed in tribal clashes

An official at the Sudanese police said yesterday that 44 persons were killed and other 22 wounded in ethnic clashes in the north west part of the country.

The source said that the police was able to stop the clashes which lasted on Wednesday between Arabs and members of the Masaleit Arabs on Western Darfour estate which is 35 Km to the northern East of the capital of the state.

Official Sudanese sources said that these confrontation were carried out just for mere tribal reasons and had no connection with the anti- government militias which are stationed in another area of Darfour in Jabal Murra area.

Meantime, the officials spokesman for the Arab League Hesham Youssef announced yesterday that a delegation representing the Arab League will pay within the few coming days an official visit to southern Sudan to hold meetings with the rebels of souther Sudan. The delegation will convey to them "the perspective of the Arab League concerning the developments of the Sudanese file."
