Arab Journalists Union condemns Israeli army's killing of Palestinian journalist
Palestine-Israel, Politics, 4/22/2003
The Arab Journalists Union (AJU) condemned Saturday the killing of journalist and photographer, Nazih Darouaza, accusing the Israeli occupation army of murder.
In a release published in Cairo by AJU's Secretary General, Salahedine Hafed, the Union said the Israeli army deliberately shot a bullet that wounded the Palestinian journalist in the head causing his death. Darouaaz, who works for the associated Press (AP) and the Palestinian TV, was wearing distinctive (PRESS signed) clothes while doing his job, the release pointed out.
Qualifying this act as a war crime, the Union said the assassination of journalists by the occupation army confirms that Israel is unmindful of international law, including the 1949 Geneva convention, the international public opinion and the international organizations that are active in the realms of human rights and freedom of the press, the release went on.
AJU, which is currently working in coordination with the International Federation of Journalists, to denounce the killings perpetrated against journalists in Iraq, will add to that file the crimes against journalists in Palestine. Nine journalists were killed in Palestine and more than ten wounded in the last two years.
