Al-Assad confers with Spanish FM

Syria's President Bashar al-Assad received on Monday SpainÕs Minister of Foreign Affairs Ana Maria Palacio and an accompanying delegation.

Talks during the meeting dealt with the latest developments in the Middle East particularly the Iraqi situation and its repercussion on the region and on the Arab-Israeli conflict.

Al-Assad stressed that Syria supports the international resolutions asserting the necessity of the United Nations' role in carrying out these resolutions. For her part, Mrs. Palacio affirmed that Spain supports Syria's stance.

Regarding the Iraqi situation Al-Assad stressed the necessity for maintaining the unity and sovereignty of the Iraqi territories and for enabling the Iraqi people to practice self determination.

Regarding the peace issue in the region, al-Assad underlined that Syria agrees on what the Palestinians accept, asserting that Syria's demands are clear, on the top of which is the return of the Golan Heights.

The two sides also reviewed the current negotiations between Syria and the European Union connected with Syrian-European Partnership.

President al-Assad pointed out the importance of the positive and constructive dialogue between Syria and Spain and the necessity for continuing this dialogue in the current circumstances.

Palacio expressed appreciation of Syria's central role in the Middle East. President Al-Assad and Palacio expressed their wishes that the UN will restore its positive and active role in the international peace and security issues.
