Ghali highlights Syria's initiative to make the ME free of mass destructive weapons
Regional-Syria, Politics, 4/22/2003
Former Secretary General of the United Nations, Butros Ghali has stressed the importance of the draft resolution submitted by Syria concerning making the region of the Middle East a zone free from mass destructive weapons, pointing out that Israel will reject such a resolution because it possesses a nuclear arsenal that threatens the whole region.
In a statement to reporters yesterday, Ghali called for an immediate American withdrawal from Iraq and for exerting efforts to enable the Iraqi people to run their country through an elected national administration.
He also stressed the necessity for the United States to restore its position and role in preserving international peace and security, and in replacing the occupation forces in Iraq.
Ghali also called for international participation in rebuilding Iraq and rejecting the American unilateralism.
