Moroccan journalists called to bring share in democratic process
Morocco, Politics, 4/19/2003

Morocco's Communication minister and Government's Spokesman, Nabil Benabdellah, on Thursday called on journalists to raise peoples' awareness as to the importance to register for the upcoming local polls, "which are of paramount importance in consolidating democracy" in the kingdom.

During a news conference held in Rabat following the government's council, Benabdellah urged journalists to pin down malpractice through substantiated arguments.

"The right to criticise, he stressed, is guaranteed to all parties provided it be done in a constructive way," noting press articles have a great influence on both the elite and youth, as well as on all other components of the society.

The national media action in terms of raising awareness as to registering in electoral lists "is far from being a move aiming to help the government but rather a contribution geared to consolidate democracy, Benabdellah went on, voicing his department's will to extent necessary help to journalist.

Morocco's Communication Minister and Government Spokesman expressed here on Thursday the government's "deep regret" concerning articles that tried "in a desperate attempt" to challenge the honesty of legislative elections held on September 27th.

"This is a vain move to discredit the ongoing democratic process in Morocco as well as the upcoming (local) polls," Benabdellah charged in news conference held following the government council's weekly meeting.
