Director General of the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization --ISCESCO- (a Rabat-based offshoot of the Organization of the Islamic Conference), Abdelaziz Othman Altwaijri, said since September 11th,the Islamic world has been subjected to unjust campaigns.

Altwaijri made this statement at the international conference entitled Islam and Peace, aimed at silencing the "unjustified accusations and allegations against Islam," and that opened Tuesday in the Tunisian capital. He added that the position adopted by some Western institutions against the Islamic religion, culture and civilization and against Moslem peoples, States and governments is taking a dangerous shape."

"This stance is against the spirit of dialogue and co-existence between civilizations and constitutes a threat to international peace and security," he went on.

"The events of September 11th had negative impacts on the conditions of Moslem minorities and communities in the West, the mission of Islamic institutions, Islamic action in education and culture and Islam's image," the Director General of the Rabat-based organization added.

The image of Islam should be corrected even in the Islamic world, and measures should be taken to face the mutations that are taking place at the international level.

The conference provided the opportunity to evaluate "Islam and Moslems, study the global environment in which they find themselves and open new horizons that will allow them to refute the false accusations to which they are subjected."
