Hizbullah intercepts Israeli jets in South Lebanon
Lebanon-Israel, Military, 4/14/2003

The Lebanese Hizbullah party's defense means yesterday intercepted Israeli warplanes which violated the Lebanese airspace twice and flew over the southern parts of the country.

In statement, the party said that the "defense unit at the Islamic resistance intercepted the Israeli warplanes which violated the Lebanese sovereignty over the areas of the central sector in South Lebanon." The statement added that Hizbullah fired later in the day its fire over the areas of the western sector of south Lebanon and on Saturday opened fire at an Israeli spy plane. No news were reported on downing any of the planes.

On February 3, the UN expressed concern over an intensive flying of the Israeli warplanes over Lebanon and warned that this will lead to escalating the situation.

The UN considers these Israeli sorties as a violation of the Blue Line drawn in the year 2000 following the withdrawal of the Israeli forces from south Lebanon following 22 years of occupation.
