Moussa criticizes UN Security Council's stand on Iraq
Regional-Iraq, Politics, 4/12/2003
The Arab League Secretary General, Amr Moussa, asserted that the UN Security Council was right when it rejected authorizing single countries to launch war or, Iraq and that it was also right when it refused to legalize the war on Iraq and that it was also right when it refused to legalize the war against Iraq.
In statement before the UN Security Council meeting held Friday to discuss the challenges facing the United Nations and international organisations regarding world peace and security, Moussa said after the outbreak of war in Iraq there was no role for the Security Council for more than three weeks.
Moussa blamed both the council and UN General Assembly for first failing to prevent and then remaining silent while war raged in Iraq.
"International and regional peace and security cannot be left alone to one country of a group of countries to conduct," Moussa said. "The council needs to address the problem, and I hope the idea of an international conference should not be rejected,' he added.
At the council meeting devoted to hearing from regional political groups on peace and security issues, Moussa urged efforts to resolve the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians and ensure that all countries are disarmed of weapons of mass destruction.
