Baghdad fall, war repercussions on Arab regimes make Moroccan headlines
Morocco-Iraq, Politics, 4/12/2003

The fall of Baghdad, repercussions of the war on Arab regimes and post-war Iraq are under focus in the Moroccan press of Friday.

Some papers talk of a long and thorny way to peace for the Iraqi people "under the US occupation" which has the monopoly of Iraq "reconstruction." Others see in the fall of Baghdad a threat to the entire region, especially that US-British forces are clearly intending to "reshape the region as they wish." Wondering on the reasons behind the easy fall of the capital and about the fate of Iraqi leaders, Moroccan publications underline the necessity of preserving the country's sovereignty and resources.

For Attajdid, Iraqis will have to mingle with the "new tartar armies that killed thousands and wounded hundreds of thousands of their children, and that will take the control of their destiny and riches." Le Matin du Sahara et du Maghreb looks into the climate of chaos that prevailed in the country after the fall of the Iraqi regime, wondering how it will be managed and who will be picked to lead the country.

The UN remains the first victim of "this unjust and unjustified war" Liberation says, describing it as a hard blow dealt by (Bush Jr.) to the diplomatic protocols regulating international relations.

Commenting the fall of the Iraqi capital, L'Economiste deplores a feeling of "collective humiliation. A humiliation before history, because we have chosen to be fooled," insisting that US presence in Iraq is a threat to the whole region. "Weren't it for the significant economic stakes, some might think that this is the beginning of a new era, better than the previous one that was disappointing at all levels." Citing US Military and political officials, L'Opinion says "now that Iraq is done, the US has Syria and Iran in its sight."
