Moroccan press on the fall of Iraqi regime
Morocco-Iraq, Politics, 4/11/2003

The Moroccan press, which run short of explanations to the fast and surprising fall of the Iraqi regime, wondered about the fate of the Iraqi people after US-British forces took over Baghdad.

"Unable to stand as military forces, democratic, developed and intelligent states, (Arab countries) became dislocated and weak, and will remain preys for long," L'independant says, stressing that the mere decision of a superpower, whether legitimate or not, is enough for a country to be attacked and invaded.

Wondering on the fate of the "mass destruction weapons" issues used as a pretext to justify the military action, L'Economiste concludes that the US was only after Iraq's oil.

On its part, "Al Ahdat Al Maghribia" daily talks of a "negotiated transaction on the departure of Saddam Hussein to have resistance forces slip out of sight to facilitate the coalition's job. Under the title "the one thousand and one nights of Bush," La Nouvelle Tribune weekly says the US and Britain are already sharing Iraq, warning that Bush who "pretends to free Iraqis from Saddam, is doing in few days what the latter has not done in 30 years."

La Nouvelle Tribune also talks of a new world order marked by the crumbling of all human values, built over hundreds of years, and which challenges all individual and collective human rights gained along centuries of struggle. L'Opinion reminds of a 1974 report by former head of the US diplomacy, Henry Kissinger, according to which US economy will require growing quantities of raw materials from abroad, especially from developing countries. Increasing needs in the USA which takes the third of the planet's consumption of raw materials, will not be without consequence on its foreign policy. "Strategic supplies will be more and more important for its military and economic security, the daily concludes."
