Freezing activity of Iraqi embassy in Cairo, Mubarak meets Saudi FM
Egypt-Iraq, Politics, 4/11/2003
As Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak yesterday was meeting with the Saudi foreign minister prince Saud al-Faisal in the presence of the Foreign minister Ahmad Maher, the Iraqi embassy in Cairo froze its political activities as a representation for the state of Iraq in Egypt, waiting for the development of conditions in the coming days in Iraq.
A well-informed Egyptian source said that the meeting between the Egyptian President and the Saudi foreign minister came in the context of consultation and coordination between the two states especially regarding the accelerated developments in the region in light of the situation in Iraq.
Mubarak reviewed with Crown Prince Abdullah the development of successive conditions in Iraq and means of alleviating tension in the region, in a telephone call on Wednesday.
Meantime, sources at the Iraqi embassy in Cairo stressed that contacts are completely cut with Baghdad and the team of the embassy follows up incidents as does the common man in the street on the TV stations, noting that the routine consulate activity concerning the Iraqi community in Egypt is continuous. The sources added that the Iraqi ambassador in Cairo assumes only his consulate task and that this situation will continue to be so because the embassy team are linked to perform their assigned tasks apart from any other thing.
The media campaign in support of the Iraqi regime had stopped, scores of journalists used to visit the Iraqi embassy daily disappeared, as well as the Iraqi ambassador from public places, trade unions and parties he used to be a guest to during the past days.
