Syrian official spokesman statement on Iraq
Syria-Iraq, Politics, 4/11/2003
A Syrian Official of the Syrian Arab Republic issued the following statement: As member of the UN Security Council and due to its national responsibility towards the brotherly people of Iraq, the Syrian Arab Republic has exerted every possible effort in the Arab and international circles to avert war on Iraq.
When the aggression took place, Syria clearly declared its position that it was and is still holding on to the international legitimacy and Arab and international consensus to stop this unjustified and illegitimate war, in the hope to spare the people of Iraq the woes and destructive consequences of the war. It also warned in advance the International Community and the (UN) Security Council of the dangers of chaos and human catastrophe that might ensue from this aggression.
Yesterday we saw what happened in Iraq and we saw the American and British forces invading Baghdad, the capital of Al-Rasheed, and all the world witnessed the broad destruction and civilian casualties in addition to the state of overwhelming turbulence and miserable circumstances that accompanied it because of the lack of security and order in different areas of Iraq.
The Syrian Arab Republic is confident that the brotherly people of Iraq will hold on to their national unity based on their ancient Arabic and Islamic history to be able to deal with the great challenges awaiting them.
Our Syrian Arab people, who were sad to see the long and hard suffering of the Iraqi people, trust in the ability of the people of Iraq to face difficulties however considerable they might be.
In this dangerous circumstance facing the Arab Nation, the Syrian Arab Republic stresses its complete commitment to the unity and territorial integrity of Iraq and calls upon the international community to exert every possible effort to put an end to the occupation and to address the catastrophic situation resulting from the aggression so that the people of Iraq can freely choose their own government without any foreign interference.
