Situation of Muslims in the West Worsened since September 11 Events
Regional, Politics, 4/9/2003
The September 11 attacks on the US and the subsequent campaigns hostile to Islam worsened the situation of Muslim minorities and communities in the west, said Abdelouahed BELKEZIZ , secretary-general of the Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC).
"In such a situation, we constantly encourage Muslim minorities to observe an exemplary behaviour, be the best representatives of tolerant Islam and respect the laws of their host countries," said Belkziz.
The OIC chief's statements came in a speech read out on his behalf at the opening of a meeting of the inter-governmental experts group in charge of following up the situation of Muslim minorities and communities in non OIC member countries, held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
The OIC has been conducting action over several years to back Muslim minorities living in non OIC member countries through vital projects, including the creation of universities, social, medical, educational, cultural centers and assistance to refugees.
