Libya's critical move regarding Morocco and Algeria
Libya-Regional, Editorial, 4/3/2003
The Arab states are facing many challenges on many fronts, some obvious and others less so. One of these challenges that has regional implications is the Algeria-Morocco dispute over Morocco's Sahara region issue.
The Algeria-Morocco problem should be resolved for the sake of the development of both states, the Maghreb region, and the Arab states. This problem is one impedepement standing along the way of Arab states integration.
One of the potential players that can have a key role in resolving this conflict is Libya. Libya's Leader of the Revolution Colonel Muammar al Qathafi is a staunch and genuine supporter of Arab states integration and unity. He among the very few is willing to call things as he sees them. The Libyan leader as such is a target of those who are hostile to Arab states integration efforts.
While those who seek genuine Arab states integration are being targeted one by one, it is important to understand how all the pieces of the puzzle fit together. And if Libya fails to understand the tremendous importance of resolving the Algeria-Morocco problem, Libya will fail to understand how much this issue will genuinely effect it, and in the very near future.
If Libya's leader seeks to play a truly positive role in Arab states integration and development, he can demonstrate so by resolving one of the thorn issues preventing Arab integration. By solving this seemingly small problem, Libya would have solved a major problem toward Arab integration. Rather than talk about issues, it is time for demonstrated action. It is within Libya's capacity to greatly help in dealing with this issue. A historic act would be for Libya's leader to solve this problem, not in a year, or even a month, but in days (and whatever the cost!)
Can it be done? that is what great leadership is about when they truly understand the cost and the benefits. This issue is not about Libya's relations with Algeria or Morocco, this is about the very serious long term and imminent issues that Libya will face, and a very complete understanding must be grasped about this. Enough distractions. Time for quick action.
