Al-Anbaa: Nearby meeting between al-Bashir and Garang in Nairobi
Sudan, Politics, 4/2/2003
The Sudanese dailies on Tuesday quoted the Sudanese foreign minister Mustafa Othman Ismael saying that President Omar Hassan al-Bashir will meet with the leader of the rebels, John Garang, in Nairobi within the coming days.
The Sudanese daily al-Anbaa said quoting the foreign minister that the Sudanese government agreed following a mediation made by Kenya to prepare for a meeting to be held between al-Bashir and Garang on the peace process in Sudan.
Ismael said " we have agreed to preparations for the meeting and the preparations to be followed." However, he did not fix a date for the meeting and confined to saying it will be within the next days. The Sudanese president is expected to meet his Kenyan counterpart today.
Al-Bashir and Garang met for the first time on July 27th in Kampala under the auspices of Uganda's president one week following the signing of Mashakos protocol which set a provisional period of 6 years for south Sudan before having a referendum on the right for self- determination.
However, a civil war has been ongoing since 20 years between the Sudanese government in the northern part of the country and the rebels of southern Sudan.
