Islamic group decide to take Iraq crisis to UN General Assembly
Regional-Iraq, Politics, 3/31/2003

Members of the Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC) in the UN held a meeting to consider the latest developments of the Iraq crisis and efforts within the world body to halt the US-led aggression on Iraq.

Ambassador Ahmad Abul Gheit, Egypt's chief delegate to the UN, said the meeting late Friday was part of a series by the Islamic and the Non-Alignment Movement (NAM) groups to reach a resolution by the UN Security Council or General Assembly.

The Islamic group has decided to issue a statement condemning the aggression on Iraq, calling for immediate halt to the current fighting, protection for the Iraqi civilians and voicing the Arab group's intention to set the Iraqi crisis on the agenda of the UN General Assembly, the Egyptian diplomat said.

The group agreed to consult with other blocks to garner necessary support to secure success for the current mounting Arab and Islamic efforts to this effect, he noted.

The decision to go to the General Assembly, he said, is one of the alternatives being probed by the Arab ambassadors, including an attempt to activate the decision adopted by the Arab League's foreign ministers to try to take the Iraqi crisis to the SC .

Attempts to avoid new division and confrontation within UN Security Council is one of the obstacles blocking activation of the AL Foreign Minister's decision, Abul Gheit explained.

Ther senior Egyptian diplomat said the coming days would witness intensive diplomatic efforts by ambassadors of the Arab, Islamic and NAM states to try to stop the military aggressions against the Iraqi people.
