Al-Shara: US failed to be welcomed in Iraq as a liberator
Syria-Iraq, Politics, 3/31/2003

Syria's People's Assembly (Parliament) held yesterday a session headed by its speaker Naji Otari where Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, Farouk al-Shara made a political View about the latest developments in the Arab and international arenas.

Al-Shara said that Arab nation is passing by a crucial historic moment represented by a U.S - British invasion against an Arab state.

He added that U.S.A based on allegations and claims that it will liberate Iraq at the time it perpetrates the destruction and killing operations against Iraqi people.

But, later, the U.S- British troops felt with shock when the Iraqi people didn't receive them with flowers as liberators. Contradictory, they received them with protests and severe resistance, al-Shara said.

The occupying troops lost the international opinion because basically they committed an aggression that is not supported by a U.N resolution or any international legitimacy. He added.

Al-Shara referred to the invading troops' attempts to represent their war as a victory through different means. But they also failed to change the truth on the battlefield, where they failed to gain even the Iraqi opposition parties support in Iraq.

In return, the national unity in Iraq has been shown through this war with a most splendid picture. This Unity that disappointed those who expected a different picture referring to the heroic steadfastness of the Iraqi people, He said. Al-Shara referred to "the pan- Arab stance of Syria vis-a-vis all issues and to the great role of President Bashar al-Assad in Arab and international Arenas. This role which warned of the disastrous repercussion of the aggressive war against Iraq on the whole region and on the whole world."

Al-Shara clarified that the U.S.A will try to prolong the time of its occupation in Iraq and it will not be able to end the war with victory. So, the American military Administration is reevaluating now what has really happened.

Syria has a national and a pan-Arab interest that "the invaders will be defeated and ejected out of Iraq because the truth proved that the American Administration led its people to a disastrous moments facing the whole international community," he added.

Later, al-Shara addressed the People's Assembly members clarifying that Syrian stance under the leadership of President Bashar al-Assad is basically taken from the people's stances. So, Syria's policy will last for the Arab steadfastness especially at this time.

At the end of his speech, al-Shara responded to the questions raised by the PA members about the Arab and international issues which concentrated about the American policy in the World and the necessity for reaching the means to uncover this policy in front of Arab and international opinion.
