Iraq-UN, Politics, 3/29/2003
The UN security council yesterday unanimously adopted a resolution provided for resuming the oil for food program for Iraq.
The UN secretary general Kofi Annan told reporters that the military situation on the ground will decide when the UN can restore back its employees to Iraq in order to start redistribution of the aid in the framework of the oil-for-food program.
The resolutions which was adopted by the UN Security Council authorizes during the 45 days making technical amendments on the program like reviewing the Iraqi contracts to make sure that foodstuffs and health supplies have priority.
Meantime, the German ambassador at the UN described the program as the largest humanitarian aid in the history of the UN, stressing that rapid implementation of this program is important for prevention of a catastrophic humanitarian catastrophe.
Annan, however, had stopped the program and pulled out more than 300 relief employees supervising the distribution of supplies just a short time before the beginning of the American- British aggression against Iraq.
