Egyptians: No to Anglo-American aggression on Iraq
Egypt-Iraq, Politics, 3/28/2003
The Anglo-American aggression on Iraq is still sending shock waves through the Egyptian streets, as witnessed by angry protests and marches denouncing the war.
The protests attracted hundreds of thousands of Egyptians from all walks of life, who have chanted unified slogans saying: "No to the war in Iraq."
The US-British attack on Iraq is absolutely unjustifiable and illegal, university graduate Ahmed Abdul Kareem told a journalist from the weekly magazine Akhr Sa'a covering a street demonstration.
The sole aim of this aggression is to usurp Arab and Iraqi oil resources and has nothing to do with weapons of mass-destruction or toppling the Iraqi regime as the US claims.
The international community must interfere to end this war, he said, adding that he rejected any sort of violent behaviour by demonstrators leading to the destruction or burning of public or private property.
Schoolteacher Mr. Yasser el-Shenawi denounced the ongoing war because two big countries are attacking one small Arab country with lethal weapons.
He said that Arab governments should adopt firm, swift action to end the war in Iraq.
Engineer Mrs. Shereen Mohammed condemned the US-British aggression on Iraq and demanded an immediate halt to all military operation, in order to protect the lives of the Iraqi people.
However, she rejected the idea of turning a peaceful anti-war street march into a tool to destroy and burn public property.
"This property belongs to the Egyptian people, not to the Americans. Therefore, it is our duty to protect it because the Americans will not repair it if it is damaged by deviant demonstrators," she said.
The US-led war in Iraq is the summit of American barbarism and chaos, another rally participant told the magazine.
We reject this war because it is a stark violation of international law and the UN Charter, schoolteacher Fayez Malak said.
"So far, the war has targeted the Iraqi people and we have to give them every possible assistance to help them resist the invasion," he said.
