Al-Jalabi: UN too weak to play a role in the post- Saddam phase
Iraq, Politics, 3/28/2003

The chairman of the Iraqi National Congress, Ahmad al-Jalabi, said yesterday that the Iraqi opposition strongly opposes the UN to play a role in the post Saddam phase in Iraq, hoping that the coalition will permit the Iraqi opposition to play a greater role especially through calling on the Iraqis to rebel.

In a statement to the British daily Daily Telegraph, the chairman of the coalition of the opposition Iraq parties for Saddam Hussein's regime said that the UN is too weak to be interested to the consequences of the "Baath Party," destroying the mass destruction weapons and dismantling the security instruments of Saddam Hussein.

Al-Jalabi considered that the outcome of the UN work in Iraq is catastrophic and the Iraqi people do not have trust in it. Al-Jalabi who made the interview with the British paper in Dukan to the north of Iraq expressed his hope that the American and British coalition forces will continue to remain in Iraq until a referendum is run and followed by elections.

Al-Jalabi said that the Iraqi opposition might provide the coalition forces with key information based on their contacts in the areas which are controlled by Saddam Hussein.

Al- Jalabi said that the coalition does not encourage any rebellion movement for three reasons which are "the bad intelligence work; fears of the political forces represented by the Iraqi people and the desire of the coalition to draw the future of Iraq alone, without getting the opposition involved." After he had stressed that the Iraqi National Congress owns scores of thousands of fighters in all parts of Iraq, al- Jalabi said that the Iraqi opposition is ready to take part in the "war of liberation" and can open a "second front in northern Iraq speedily."

He added that the opposition leaders are able to form a provisional government, stressing that the US is almost marching its stances to theirs, noting that the US is no longer talking about a military rule, rather a provisional Iraqi authority.
