Saudi crown prince, Mubarak discuss the war against Iraq
Egypt-Saudi Arabia, Politics, 3/27/2003
Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Abdullah Ibn Abdul Aziz has discussed with Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak "current conditions in the region," especially the war launched by the USA against Iraq, according to the Saudi official news agency yesterday ( Wednesday).
The agency confined to saying that Crown Prince Abdullah on Tuesday evening received a telephone call from Mubarak during which "current conditions in the region were discussed." However, diplomatic sources in Riyadh said the two leaders also discussed "the efforts made to halt the war launched by the USA against Iraq since last Thursday." The sources, which preferred to be anonymous added that the two leaders agreed to "coordinate the move in order to revitalize the resolutions" of the Arab foreign ministers councils during their Monday meeting in Cairo in order to preserve Iraq's unity and the live of the innocent Iraqi civilians.
It is noted that the telephone call between the Saudi crown prince and the Egyptian president came after Mubarak's meeting on Tuesday with the Saudi foreign minister prince Saud al-Faisal who announced in Riyadh that Saudi Arabia proposed to both the US and Iraq to halt the war and the proposal was not rejected and Saudi Arabia is waiting for a reply.
However, in a clarification broadcast by the official Saudi news agency yesterday, al-Faisal said that what the kingdom proposed to "Washington and Baghdad were just general ideas and not an initiative and these ideas have been ever stressed by the kingdom in many occasions." Al-Faisal said that the ideas "concentrate on the need of immediate stop to the war, settling the regrettable world split on ways of dealing with the Iraqi issue."
However, the spokesman for the US Department Of State Richard Boucher denied Washington to have been notified by this initiative. Iraq's minister of information Muhammad Saeed al-Sahaf also denied to have received any similar initiative.
