Iraqi ambassador in Amman: Baghdad is ready to send new diplomats to replace expelled ones
Iraq-Jordan, Politics, 3/27/2003

The Iraqi ambassador in Amman on Wednesday announced that Baghdad will send three new diplomats to replace the diplomats who were expelled from Amman, considering that what had happened as a "passing summer fog," according to the Jordanian official news agency.

The Iraqi ambassador in Amman, Sabah Yassin, said following his meeting with the Jordanian minister of industry and trade, Salah Eddin al-Bashir, on Wednesday that the "three expelled Iraqi diplomats will be replaced by other three as soon as possible.."

The ambassador added that the Iraqi-Jordanian relations as "a river of amity and historical depth and that the leaderships in the two countries have the sane level of care to continue these relations." The Iraqi ambassador added that what happened was a "passing summer fog," stressing continued work to preserve contacts between the two states.

On Sunday Jordan expelled five Iraqi diplomats considered as persona non grata. Later, the Jordanian government retracked its decision concerning two of them, noting that the two men are able to return back to Jordan, at a time when they had already left for Baghdad.

The Jordanian King Abdullah II announced "Jordan's readiness to replace them by other diplomats so as to avail the Iraqi embassy in Amman to work freely." The Iraqi foreign minister Naji Sabri strongly deplores Jordan's expulsion of the Iraqi diplomats, accusing Amman of surrendering to an American request to this effect.
