Morocco, Senegal probe Human Rights issues
Morocco-Senegal, Politics, 3/26/2003

Moroccan human rights minister, Mohamed Aujjar, probed in Rabat on Monday with the Senegalese high commissioner for human rights, Bassine Niang, human rights issues in the two African countries.

During the meeting, the Senegalese minister praised the efficacious action of the civil society in both countries saying she is "happy at the convergence of viewpoints on Moroccan and Senegalese policies in human rights education, popularization and promotion."

Aujjar surveyed different steps taken by Morocco to reinforce the rule of law and enhance human rights, underlining that Morocco ratified many international human rights conventions and harmonized domestic legislations with provisions of international humanitarian law.

An independent arbitration commission was set up to define compensations for moral and physical damages incurred by victims of illegal imprisonment and by relatives of missing people, said the Moroccan minister.

"The amount of indemnities reached US $80 million," he added.

The minister also stressed that a human rights educational program aimed at enhancing human rights culture is currently taught at Moroccan schools.
