Moroccan press hails Iraqi resistance, hopes war ends
Morocco-Iraq, Politics, 3/26/2003
Headlines in Moroccan press hailed Tuesday the "unexpected" and "heroic" resistance of the Iraqi people, hoping for an end to the "dirty war."
Moroccan newspapers unanimously stressed that the Iraqi resistance is "challenging" US plans, and some of them even called the developments on the ground signs of an "Iraqi Vietnam."
"According to "Le Matin du Sahara et du Maghreb," the events of the last 48 hours seem to confirm world fears.
"Whatever losses it might incur, Iraq, which is fighting with unequal arms, achieved a great victory over its enemy by depriving it of an easy triumph," Al-Alam says in its editorial, adding that "the Iraqi people's resistance shook the self-confidence of those who promised their soldiers a picnic in Iraq."
"Governments Ğdriven by an arrogance that stems from their huge military force- forget the importance of courage," the editorialist writes, adding that "these governments can never overcome peoples' moral force."
In its editorial, "Al Ittihad Al Ichtiraki" stresses that the world community can not remain tongue-tied, explaining that after the security council fiasco, the only alternative is to bring the case before the United Nations General Assembly for member states to assume their responsibilities.
Once again, the US is involved in a conflict it can't control despite its power and military means, says Al Bayane on its part.
As to the parallel war of media and propaganda, especially after images of US POWs were broadcast, "L'Economiste" says that for the public opinion, President W. Bush's Geneva convention argument "is hardly convincing, for someone who decided to invade a country without a UN mandate."
"Some had the courage to cast images making information their top priority while others, who are not necessarily a model of virtue in the field, chose to alter them, or even censor them, L'Economiste goes.
In the same controversy whether to publish or not the images, "Aujourd'hui le Maroc" says the debate is not serious, because it is the US that chose to wage a merciless media war using massive disinformation, and has no lessons to give the world on that."
