Iraq-UN, Politics, 3/26/2003
The Iraqi trade minister has called on the UN secretary General Kofi Annan to interfere in order to work according with the oil for food program. In a press conference he held yesterday in Baghdad, He stressed that the decision which was taken to halt working according to this program is considered a violation to UN security council resolution 986.
Saleh condemned the measures aiming at cutting food and medicines supplies from the Iraqi people at a time when the Iraqis are exposed to an American aggression.
He indicated that the items which were on their way to Iraq and were stopped, as well as obstructing contracts signed with Iraq to ensure food and medicines, estimated at a value of 21 billion dollars were enough to provide Iraq with food stuffs and medicines for two years at least.
In conclusion of the press conference Saleh said that Iraq is not in need of aid from the USA and Britain which strike people and cities in Iraq by missiles and bombs and that Iraq has enough of foodstuffs. He said that the Iraqi authorities have ensured the needs of the Iraqi people for a period of 6 months ahead, realizing the difficulty of the current phase.
