Arab ministers condemn aggression against Iraq; Kuwaiti reservations
Regional-Iraq, Politics, 3/25/2003
Syria's representative at the UN Security Council Mikhael Wahba, on behalf of the Arab group, yesterday proposed convening a meeting for the UN Security Council to discuss means of ending the American- British aggression against Iraq, in implementation of the decision taken by the Arab ministerial council in Cairo earlier in the day. The decision unanimously, with a Kuwaiti reservation, condemned the aggression and called for the "immediate withdrawal" of the invading forces from Iraq.
This condemnation came inspite of two telephone calls made by the US Secretary Of State, Colin Powell, with his Egyptian and Saudi counterparts Ahmad Maher and Saud al-Faisal, respectively asking them to convince their Arab colleagues to accept the invasion of Iraq as an inevitable matter, stated by the spokesman for the US state department just few minutes before the end of the meeting of the Arab ministers.
The Syrian representative at the UN Wahba said after a meeting for the delegations of the Arab groups at the UN in New York that asking for an emergency session of the UN security council came in implementation of the decision taken by the Arab Ministerial council. He added that the Arab representatives want the council to halt the aggression against Iraq and its people and asks for the withdrawal of foreign troops from its lands.
Earlier in the day, meetings of the Arab Foreign Ministers started in Cairo for reviewing the US-British aggression on Iraq and its dangerous repercussions on the neighboring countries and on the Pan-Arab security.
Lebanese Foreign Minister, Mahmoud Hammoud, asserted his country's opposition and condemnation of the US-British aggression on Iraq which as a clear violation of the United Nations Charter and the international law.
Hammoud called for urgent Arab and international effort for ending this aggression, US-British forces withdrawal from Iraq and for returning the international inspectors to achieve their missions.
He stressed Iraq's sovereignty, independence and keeping the neighboring countries' security and stability.
Secretary General of the General Popular Committee of the African Unity in Libya Ali Abdul Salam al-Tureiki, hailed the Iraqi people' steadfastness and confronting the aggression.
He condemned the US-British "deception and delusion ways in their aggression on Iraq which is considered as an aggression on the international law and the United Nations Charter."
Al-Tureiki pointed out that the US-British aggression targets the whole Arab region to serve Israel interests.
