Syrian Baath Party: US attack on Iraq are illegal and immoral
Iraq-Syria, Politics, 3/24/2003
Al-Baath Arab Socialist Party -- pan-Arab Leadership -- on Sunday circulated a message to the other parties on the US.-British aggression on Iraq.
In its message the party's "pan-Arab leadership" underlined that the region has entered with the start of the US.-British war a dangerous stage the grave consequences of which on the region and on the world are unpredictable.
The message indicated that the United States and its allies have turned their back to the appeals of the world public opinion, and to the majority of the UN. Security Council members who all opposed the war on Iraq.
The message underlined that such a war is unjustified legally and morally because it doesn't target the mass destruction weapons but aims to impose hegemony on Iraq, and the declared aims form a dangerous precedence in international relations because these aims are targeting change of a regime which no longer imposes a threat on its neighbors. And the unilateral attitude of the Unite States without UN Security Council consent would lead to grave repercussions -- most of all to chaos in international relations due to the harm that has been done to the international law and role in the achievement of world peace and security.
The message stressed that following the launch of war by the United States on Iraq and due to the repercussions of such a war on the region, al-Baath party in Syria called on all the brotherly and friendly parties of the world to condemn the war and to exercise pressure for preventing the giving of facilities to this war and to act for halting it.
The message also called the parties to "condemn the logic of unilaterality and hegemony and to stress the necessity for referring to international law."
