Iraq-Lebanon, Politics, 3/22/2003
The Lebanese President Emil Lahoud has stressed that the negative results which will be inflected by the military aggression against Iraq will not be immediate and limited to the areas of the fighting, rather its implications will be on the international community as a whole and might last for years to come.
During his meeting yesterday with the EU- ME peace process coordinator Miguel Moratinos, President Lahoud said that Lebanon which has denounced the aggression, bases its stances on its continued commitment to the international community and international norms and charters.
Lahoud stressed that the European states are required to move effectively in order to put an end to the grave rush towards military attacks and to restore back honor to the UN organization which should continue to be the resort for the peoples and countries whose rights are usurped.
The Lebanese president questioned if through undermining international principals and ignoring its resolutions, "we can ban terrorism and extremism.?"
The Lebanese president told Moratinos that Lebanon follows up the developments of the regional situation and is careful not to enable Israel to exploit the situation emerged in Iraq and to implement its revenge and aggressive schemes against Lebanon.
Lahoud also stressed the need of giving interest to the explosive situation in the Palestinian territories because of the Israeli aggressions. He said the aggression against Iraq should not divert the attention of the world from what is taking place of "Israeli massacres."
For his part, Moratinos said "we want the war to end very soon and Iraqi crisis to be run by the UN."
He added "we want to see Iraq's full sovereignty on its lands and we are ready to participate and take part in the process of eliminating the sufferings of the Iraqi people." He expressed the concerns of the Europeans over the life of women, men, and children in Iraq. He also renewed Europe's commitment to the ME peace process.
