Morocco, Judicial, 3/21/2003
The Casablanca Court of Appeal has decided on Thursday to resume, on April 3th, the trial of 14 youths accused of "detaining object contrary to morality" and of "acts likely to undermine Islamic faith."
Defence lawyers have requested the provisional discharge of the three youths still under detention and also the acquittal of all their clients "in the absence of damning evidence," and the weakness of the charges against them.
During an exceptional hearing held on March 11th, the court has decided to grant provisional discharge to eleven out the fourteen defendants.
A first instance court handed out this March 6th one month to one year prison sentences and fines ranging from 50 to US$ 300 against the group of youths, mostly hard rock musicians.
